Nuclear Pharmacy Tech?

I am going to go back to school to become a Pharmacy technician through the University of Florida College of Pharmacy’s continued education. It’s only a 14 week program and you can do it online or at a local hospital (in Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando, or Tampa). My question is once I become a pharmacy tech can I suggest to my potential employer that I wish to advance to a nuclear pharmacy tech or is that extra training on my part? I have heard both, but can’t for the life of me find information for doing it myself. Pharmacy techs and nuclear pharmacy techs I would love to hear from both of you. Have a great day!!!

Hello shelly85!
Of the 48 states ONLY two stated demand education: Utah & Washington.
State criteria to allow one to become a technician varies state to state:
1. Registered with their state = placed on a list that states that this person meets the specific states requirements to be a technician.
2. Nationally Certified = pass either PTCB or ExCPT; the state will determine which of the two, or either can be used. Either exam yields a title of CPhT = certified pharmacy technician. Oregon is a state that allows either exam to be used.
3. Specific formal on the job training, Texas is one state that requires a technician to register as a trainee until he or she passes the training and the PTCB exam.
4. Education: Wa and Utah require graduation from an accredited pharm tech program. California requires graduation from such a program OR passing the PTCB.
5. State certification – The state provides its own exam other than a nationally recognized exam.
6. License – the state may call the paper a tech gets from the state board of pharmacy a license. However the states actually use the word license for the word registration misleadingly.
7. Fingerprinting – may or may not be required with or without a registration.
8. Fee – varies from $10 to $200 one time fee, yearly and every other year fees.
9. Some condition of meeting a number of Continued Education Hours or Units aka CEU’s. Some states require a specific number of CE’s to be LIVE

Most states have come to the conclusion that with the recent medication error rate increasing, that certification and or education or training is required and or will be required in the near future.

There is no reciprocity between most states. So if you move to Louisiana you will most likely have to do 500 hours before you get registered as a tech EVEN if you have been a tech for 20 yrs in Utah!
